I run a not-for-profit company providing free therapy equipment for children and some conductive education charities. All money we raise through fundraising and donations goes to buy materials and deliver the finished products; I even deliver myself to keep the costs down if cost effective. There are no wages paid, my time and utilise I give for free to help the children.
I started the organisation after my daughter told me about a pikler triangle my granddaughter had used during therapy (she has CP), the cost online was £170, I told her I would make one, the cost of materials was only £30. A friend of my daughters then asked about one for her child, I then decided to make products for other children with a need. My daughter and granddaughter are my inspiration.
I made Pikler triangles Invented by a Hungarian paediatrician over 100 years ago, I now do standing ladders, walking/standing ladder, Parallel bars, adjustable seat benches, both fixed and adjustable stools and small chairs, some of these things are my own design (self-taught woodworker). All equipment is made to meet each child’s size. I also made a tray recently and fixings to fit a child’s wheelchair completely from scratch, if bought would have cost £300 I was told, cost for materials £28.
I have supplied equipment all over the UK from Scotland in the north, Yarmouth in the East, Brighton in the South, Swansea in the west and Northern Island., at present Unfortunately I am unable to provide parallel bars to Scotland and Northern Island at this time. I also pass equipment on once it is no longer required.
I have made equipment for Footprints conductive education and 16 children in Nottingham, Steps conductive education in Leicestershire, Cerebral Palsy Cymru, a hospice, small steps conductive education and a school.
I am a disabled veteran (damaged hearing) and PTSD, I went to Yugoslavia during the Balkans war to do voluntary work, when I returned home, I helped concentration camp victims from Bosnia in my local hospital and continued after their release. Making the equipment also helps with my mental health by keeping me occupied. Many thousands of children are going without the equipment they need, and would benefit from, it seems like the word disability comes up and prices shy rocket.
Every time I see the smiles on the children’s faces it inspires me even more.
My granddaughter and inspiration who has Cerebral Palsy
